Desert Wars - The effects of the war in Libya and the EU anti-insurgency measures in the Sahel

In mid January a new rebel group formed in Northern Mali, quickly capturing large areas. Parts of the army felt insufficiently equipped or supported for the insurgence, instigating a coup d' état against the government Touré just a month a ahead of the election. Yet the current escalation in Mali against the backdrop of a hunger crisis is only the result of the destabilisation and militarisation of the Sahara and the Sahel, the war in Libya and the pursuit of western interest.

Mitte Januar gründete sich eine neue Rebellengruppe im Norden Malis und eroberte rasch große Gebiete. Teile der Armee fühlten sich für ihren Kampf gegen den Aufstand nicht aureichend ausgerüstet bzw. unterstützt und putschten daraufhin am 22. März gegen den die Regierung Touré - einen Monat vor den vorgesehenen Wahlen. Die aktuelle Eskalation in Mali, die sich vor dem Hintergrund einer drohenden Hungerkatastrophe abspielt, ist jedoch nur ein Ergebnis der Destabilisierung und Militarisierung der Sahara und des Sahel in der Folge des Libyen-Krieges und westlicher Interessenspolitik.
