Crisis, social struggles and rassist roll back in greece

Greece is the laboratory for the strategies to manage the crisis in Europe. The effects of the global economic and financial crisis are nowhere else so severe as in Greece. Only the intervention of the troika of IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission saved the country from bankruptcy. The price for the rescue measures is incredibly high. Greece has to bend to harsh austerity measures. Wages and pensions are drastically cut, the public health sector is dismantled and all social security radically cut. The consequence is a five year economic depression and record levels of unemployment. But also the social struggles and contradictions are nowhere else as strong as in Greece, starting with the revolt after the murder of young activist Alexis Grigoropoulos in December 2008, followed by strikes and demonstrations in subsequent years, the occupation of of the central Athen square Syntagma in summer 2011, militant directs action and occupations. Besides these social struggles from below alarming racists mobilisation against migrants and refugees as well the growing power of openly fascists forces such as Golden Dawn.

Griechenland gilt als das Labor für die herrschenden Strategien des Krisenmanagements in Europa. In keinem europäischen Land sind die Auswirkungen der globalen Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise so weitreichend wie in Griechenland. Nur durch die Intervention der Troika aus IWF, Europäischer Zentralbank und Europäischer Kommission, konnte das Land vor dem Staatsbankrott gerettet werden. Der Preis für die Rettungsmaßnahmen ist allerdings enorm hoch. Griechenland muss sich einem brutalen Spardiktat unterwerfen. Löhne und Renten wurden drastisch gekürzt, die öffentliche Gesundheitsversorgung demontiert und sämtliche Sozialleistungen radikal gekürzt. Konsequenz ist eine seit 5 Jahren andauernde wirtschaftliche Depression und ein Rekordniveau an Arbeitslosigkeit. Auch die sozialen Kämpfe und Widersprüche sind nirgendwo in Europa so stark wie in Griechenland: beginnend mit der Revolte nach der Ermordung des Aktivisten Alexis Grigoropoulos Ende 2008, über eine Serie von Generalstreiks und Massendemonstrationen in den folgenden Jahren, der Besetzung des Athener Syntagma-Platzes im Sommer 2011, bis hin zu unzähligen militanten Aktionen und Besetzungen. Neben diesen sozialen Kämpfen von unten kommt es in letzter Zeit auch zu einer erschreckenden rassistischen Mobilisierung gegen MigrantInnen und Flüchtlinge und zu einem Erstarken offen faschistischer Kräfte, wie der Partei 'Goldene Morgenröte'.
