Who owns the city? Manifestations of new social movements in Munich in 1970s - walk through exhibition

The exhibition in Munich's city museum approaches political and social models of urban spaces, in which projects and networks emerged from the question of organising. The exhibition follows the student movement of the 1960s impulse for anti-authoritarian thinking and acting as an alternative to the form of representative politics. The decade between the inauguration of the first social liberal government 1969 and the "political and moral change" was influenced by historically unique emancipatory surge that was based on a concrete utopia. The free dealing with urban spaces and the search for social alternatives to the metropolis as a purely economically interested object. Part of this was the emergence of district initiatives as well as concepts that were based on autonomous participation and development, self determination and grass roots democracy.The exhibition follows the ideas of new social movements and their implementation in manifold ways of life, showing the political and social manifestations of that time.

"Die Ausstellung im Münchner Stadtmuseum thematisiert, ausgehend von der Organisationsfrage alternativer Gegenkultur, politische und soziale Modelle herrschaftsfreier urbaner Räume, in denen Projekte und Projekt-Netzwerke entstanden. Sie verfolgt den in der Studentenbewegung der 1960er Jahre freigesetzten Impuls antiautoritären Denkens und Handelns als Gegenentwurf zu einem formell repräsentativ verfassten Politikverständnis. Die Dekade zwischen dem Amtantritt der ersten sozialliberalen Regierung 1969 und der "politisch-moralischen Wende", wie sie von der CDU im Bundestagswahlkampf 1983 propagiert wurde, war geprägt von einem historisch bis dahin einzigartigen emanzipatorischen Schub, dem eine konkrete Utopie zugrunde lag: Der freie Umgang mit urbanen Lebensräumen und die Suche nach gesellschaftlichen Alternativen zur Metropole als Objekt rein ökonomischer Interessen. Dazu gehörten die entstehenden Stadtteil-Initiativen ebenso wie Konzepte, die auf autonome Teilhabe und Entwicklung, Selbstbestimmung und Basisdemokratie aufbauten. Die Ausstellung geht dem Ideenfeuerwerk der neuen sozialen Bewegungen und dessen Umsetzung in vielgestaltige Lebensentwürfe nach und zeigt die darin zum Ausdruck kommenden politischen und sozialen Manifestationen."
