ARTE COMO EXPRESION DE RESISTENCIA EN GUATEMALA, Art as an expression of resistance in Guatemala

With the Guatemalan Rapper Nim Alae we will discuss how art can become a form of resistance. He will talk about his experiences. He says "We, the youth Mayan in Guatemala are the descendants of an old culture that was passed on to us. We are the descendants of many protests and forms of resistance against Western ideas, but also we are descendants of many old traditions and values. With art we transform resistance. Especially the youth expresses themselves politically in the from of Hiphop, theater, Dance, Graffiti or wall painting projects.Our aim is to revive memories of the past and simultaneously affect change. We want to view art not merely as art, but as a political tool. Our political, economic and social and cultural problems have their origin in the colonisation, the violent introduction of Western models, which is the current continuation of the genocide at that time, pushed by the instalment of apparent democracies that are claimed to be progressive." They are recovering their cultural heritage as maya descendents and defend against western cultural impositions.

Mit dem guatemaltekischen Rapper Nim Alae wird diskutiert, wie Kunst widerständig werden kann. Er berichtet von seinen Erfahrungen, wie sich die Jugend Guatemalas durch die Kunst politisch einbringt. Dazu sagt er: „Wir, die Jugendlichen Mayas in Guatemala, sind die Nachkommen einer alten Kultur, die uns weitervererbt wurde. Wir sind die Nachkommen vieler Aufstände und Widerstände gegen westliche Ideen, aber auch vieler Traditionen und alter Werte. Mit der Kunst geben wir der Form des Widerstandes eine neue Wendung. Vor allem sind es wir Jugendlichen, die sich auf verschiedene Weise ausdrücken: durch Hiphop, Theater, Tanz, Graffiti oder Wandgemälde. Unser Ziel ist es, die Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit wieder zu beleben, aber gleichzeitig auch Veränderung zu bewirken. Wir wollen die Kunst nicht nur als Kunst sehen, sondern als politisches Werkzeug. Unsere politischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und kulturellen Probleme haben ihren Ursprung in der Kolonialisierung, im gewaltsamen Einführen eines westlichen Modells, das heute die Weiterführung des Genozids von damals ist, vorangetrieben durch die Einführung von Schein-Demokratien, die als Fortschritt ausgegeben werden.“
